Central Michigan narrowly defeated Western Michigan 16-14 in a closely contested game at Kelly/Shorts Stadium in Mount Pleasant. The victory ended Central Michigan’s five-game losing streak and allowed them to reclaim the Victory Cannon Trophy in this storied rivalry, now in its 95th matchup.
Central Michigan built an early lead, heading into halftime with a 13-0 advantage, thanks to a rushing touchdown from running back B.J. Harris and two field goals by Tristan Mattson. Western Michigan responded in the second half with a pick-six by safety Tate Hallock and a one-yard touchdown run from Jalen Buckley, narrowing the gap to 16-14. Despite the comeback, the Broncos fell short as the Chippewas’ defense held firm in the final minutes.
Key players included B.J. Harris, who rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown for Central Michigan, and Tate Hallock, who showcased his defensive prowess for Western Michigan with a 78-yard interception return for a score.
WMU is now 5-6 (4-3 MAC) on the season.
